The remix of form in Graphic Utopia is undeniable. The rigid object stripped the original characteristic of carpets but preserved the gesture of original object. The contradiction between object’s visual quality and the actual quality creates a slight humor.
In Graphic Utopia, I used the same trick and implant new function into the object. The rigid carpets became two coffee tables who try to camouflage themselves into a pile of carpets.
The folding screen also mixed with multiple typologies. It mixed the suit mirror and folding screen. This remix generates a new function for the space divider.
Carpet is a symbol of luxury lifestyle. It elevates people from direct contact with the ground. But it also has an aged aesthetic. In Graphic Utopia, I remixed modern aesthetic with traditional rug composition. This formula produced the carpet pattern in the collection. From a more traditional composition with geometric sense to a total abstract reinterpretation.
In Graphic Utopia, clash materials happened on most products. The selection of materials and the clash of them are conscious decisions. Besides the clash between mirror and laminate, using Laminate and polyurethane foam as materials to clash are not only a continuous exploration of materials.
Laminate and polyurethane foam are both used in furniture industry as low-end or common materials. In my work, the value of these low-end materials is reversed and reconstructed as a consequence of the different methods I applied to them.
